Why lowering cortisol is important

Cortisol, known as the stress response chemical is one of the many neurotransmitters released in your brain and into your body.

It can be destructive when it is at high levels over long periods of time. It is commonly known to be one of the trigger chemicals. When it is at above average levels it commonly affects your sleep cycle and most people will only get 3-4 hrs a night when this is occurring. There are ways to hijack this chemical from causing damage but the best way to resolve the conflict is to fix it. This means you need to renew your mind, by creating new neuronal pathways in your brain.

By using a 5 pillar approach to healing the brain you can achieve a brand new mind and lower your cortisol to normal levels. I suggest taking the Adrenal Neurohormone Lab test to find out exactly what your levels are and go from there. Most people can get immediate results by increasing the GABA neurotransmitter levels in your brain and this will help bring balance to the high glutamate levels which are induced from the cortisol stress response. GABA is the body’s main calming neurotransmitter. By slowing excessive firing of neurons, it supports the body’s natural mechanisms for quieting the mind and gradually falling asleep.

Common consequences of leaving your cortisol unchecked leads to serious personal and social factors including • Family conflict, •low self esteem, •Disability, •withdrawal from social activities, •alcohol & substance abuse, • legal and criminal problems, •Anxiousness and other mental ailments, •Suicide

Cortisol and adrenaline are the 2 main trigger chemicals released when you are under threat or dangerous situations. Cortisol specifically can temporarily shutdown various body systems not needed in a fight or flight situation. These include the digestive, immune, and reproductive systems. It also releases glucose to help repair damaged tissue. Once the danger is averted, the Cortisol levels gradually normalize and the heartbeat, blood pressure, and other body systems should return to normal. However, if the body is subjected to continuous stress, such as a person with anxiety, ptsd, or cptsd thats when Cortisol can remain at high levels. This can disrupt your body’s processes and create many health problems such as: •Brain problems, heart problems, headaches, mood issues. Memory or concentration struggles. Weight gain, digestive issues and trouble sleeping. Excessive stress affects your physical health and can also disrupt your mental health. Here are a few strategies for reducing your stress immediately in your daily routine…

1. Deep Breathing, this is simple and effective for an immediate response. Breathe with your diaphragm rather than your chest. Try this exercise: •Inhale 3 -4 seconds, •Exhale 6- 8 seconds, • repeat pattern 10 times. 2. Canine Companion, overall they can help you feel calmer and lower your cortisol stress symptoms. Spending time with your pet can also help increase levels of oxytocin and decreasing the production of the stress hormone cortisol. However, for those that are under more intense triggers from childhood trauma or military servicemen with CPTSD this strategy may not be as effective. 3. Meditation, scientific evidence shows that meditation can help calm Anxiousness and stress and enhance brain function. Not only did the meditation help but it also provided an increase in positive self statements. 4. Social Connections, never underestimate being around the right people. Building and maintaining healthy relationships may help you feel understood and cared for. When you care for others and feel cared for, your brain releases Oxytocin, the “bonding” hormone, which can counteract some of the negative effects of stress. 5. Nutritional Support, nutrients, herbals and essential oils can help support your bodies resistance to stress.

“Everyday Stress Relief” from Brain MD by Dr Daniel Amen, was specifically formulated to help replenish your brain and bodies nutrients that can be depleted by stress. This supplement includes herbal extracts clinically proven to have calming and anti- stress effects, helping you to feel less anxious without making you feel sleepy. ESTABLISHING OUR TRIBE by Lavon Head

We need our girlfriends at every age, acquaintances with whom we share a social gathering as well as those we entrust with our hearts. It’s nice to have friendships of all kinds, but how do we know which people are part of our tribe; …those friendships that run deep and will last for years?

There is a theory that one way to choose a friend is to decide if you have 2 beers with them and let them watch your puppy over the weekend. The first thing is asking yourself “if they are worth spending your time with”, the second is “do you trust them”.

We should also ask…”how they make us feel about ourselves”. Do they make us feel relaxed and enjoy their company enough to forget feeling self-conscious? Do they listen when we talk and offer support? Do they keep our confidence? Do they avoid gossip? Are we engaging in an activity that is healthy and satisfying?

We should also pay attention to their moods and emotions to determine if they are stable. The best friendships are not demanding or clingy, but welcome others into the group for social functions. They also should have long-term close friends, and if not, you might want to find out why their past friendships ended.

Amidst all the good qualities we want in a friend, possibly the most important is grace. When we make a mistake, will they come to us and ask us to work it out? Will they give us the opportunity to explain or apologize?

A good friend will do all of the above and is worth adding to your tribe. They’ll have those 2 beers with you (or glasses of wine) And take care of your puppy. Hold them close to your heart.
